Germany: Activists to rally in Leipzig Oct. 15 to demand energy price cap

Activists to rally in Leipzig, Germany, from 14:00 Oct. 15 to demand energy price cap; police to deploy to facilitate demonstrations.

Warning

Event

The "That's Enough - We Don't Freeze for Profits" alliance, a collective of more than 40 local organizations, plans to rally in Leipzig Oct. 15 to demand that authorities cap energy prices and ban electricity and gas cuts, among other requests. Participants will begin demonstrating at Lindenauer Markt, Otto-Runki-Platz/Rabet, and the Volkshaus from 14:00. Demonstrators will then move from those locations to Augustusplatz, where a rally will begin at 15:00; rally participants have called for the demonstration to subsequently proceed around the city's ring road. Police have indicated that some 10,000 demonstrators could attend the gatherings.

Police will deploy to facilitate and monitor the events. Authorities have announced that they will impose temporary traffic closures, including lanes on the city's ring road. Large crowds could prompt congestion on public transport as activists arrive for the demonstrations. Scuffles between police and demonstrators cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstrations as a precaution. Plan for localized disruptions near the rallies and seek alternative routes to circumvent affected areas. In the event of violence, leave the area. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
