Authorities disposing of WWII-era bomb in Moers, Germany, Oct. 26; localized evacuations and transport disruptions in place.

Informational

Event

Authorities are responding to the discovery of a WWII-era bomb in Moers, approximately 10 km (6 miles) west of Duisburg, Oct. 26. The device was discovered during construction work on Orchideenstrasse in the Kapellen area. Authorities will impose 250 meter (820 foot) evacuation zone around the device in addition to a 500 meter (1,640 foot) security cordon within which no traffic is permitted.

Officials state all roads within the larger security cordon will be closed from 16:00, this includes a section of the A57 Highway. Public transport normally routed through the area will be canceled or diverted. Increased traffic congestion is likely in the surrounding area as drivers seek alternative routes. Authorities estimate the disposal operation will be completed by 18:00; lingering disruptions are possible beyond this time as cordons are lifted and traffic flows return to normal.

Advice

Avoid the area until authorities give the all-clear. Check public transport schedules and local traffic conditions for disruptions before travel; plan alternative routes if necessary and allow additional time for travel.
