Guatemala: Retired military veterans to protest nationwide Oct. 4-7
Retired military veterans to protest across Guatemala from 06:00 Oct. 4 to 06:00 Oct. 7; roadblocks likely to cause transport disruptions.
Event
The Association of Military Veterans (La Asociacion de Veteranos Militares) announced plans to stage nationwide protests and roadblocks between 06:00 Oct. 4 and 06:00 Oct. 7. Participants plan to block highways and areas around airports, ports, and land borders. The veterans are demanding that Congress approves a bill that would increase their pensions.
Some of the locations where protesters plan to set up roadblocks include the surrounding areas of San Jose Airport (CSJ), Santo Tomas de Castilla Port, Barrios Port, and Portuaria Quetzal. Additionally, dozens of roadblocks are likely along the Pan-American Highway (CA-1), and the Pacific Highway (CA-2), among other major intercity roads and bridges nationwide.
Transport disruptions are likely on affected routes nationwide. Disruptions to the operations of affected ports and airports are possible. Heightened security measures and clashes are possible near roadblocks and demonstration sites.
Advice
Avoid all protests and related events as a precaution. Do not attempt to cross a roadblock; utilize alternative routes or wait for the police to reopen affected roads. Confirm business appointments in advance. Allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Guatemala in the coming days.
