M62 Movement, other activists call for protests across Niger Oct. 9; officials permit related march in Tillaberi Oct. 8. Disruptions likely.
Event
The M62 Movement and allied activists, including those affiliated with the Pan-African Network for Peace, Democracy, and Development (REPPAD), have called for protests across Niger Oct. 9. The purpose of the demonstrations is to denounce perceived high costs of living as well as the presence of foreign military forces in the country that are involved in Operation Barkhane, among other issues.
The British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has accordingly cautioned that REPPAD has organized a protest in Tillaberi Oct. 9, advising individuals to "exercise vigilance and avoid large crowds." Authorities have notably banned related protest activity in Niamey Oct. 9 due to security concerns.
Additionally, officials have authorized REPPAD activists to hold an associated demonstration in Tillaberi Oct. 8. Activists are permitted to stage a march and meeting from 08:30 to 13:00, with participants gathering at the OLA gas station and then marching to the Tribune Officielle (where the meeting may be held) via the Grand Marche.
Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely in areas subject to related protest activity. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Activists may organize similar demonstrations in areas across Niger over the medium term.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations to mitigate exposure to any clashes that may materialize. If violence breaks out in your area, immediately leave the vicinity and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for transport and business disruptions in areas subject to protest activity. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and your home government.
