Philippines: Flights at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) remain suspended as of Oct. 24 after a plane overshoots runway /update 2

Flight suspension continues at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) in the Philippines as of Oct. 24 after plane overshoots runway.

Critical

Event

Officials have extended a suspension of domestic and international flights at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (CEB) through at least Oct. 25 after Korean Air (KE) 631 overshot the runway amid heavy rain and poor visibility. At least eight people sustained minor injuries due to the incident. Reports indicate that hundreds of passengers remain stranded at the airport; CEB management has sought clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines for existing planes at CEB to depart.

Delays in moving the plane and extended flight disruptions are possible. Officials only plan to reopen a portion of the affected runway to smaller aircraft from Oct. 26, and flight disruptions could continue for large-body aircraft in the coming days.

Advice

Confirm flights if planning travel or route air freight through CEB through at least Oct. 25. Do not check out accommodations until verifying onward travel. Consider using alternative regional airports and ferry services for time-sensitive travel to or from Cebu.
