Labor unions to stage demonstrations, strikes in Lisbon, Porto, and Funchal Portugal Oct. 15. Localized transport disruptions likely.
Event
Several labor unions, including the General Confederation of Portuguese Workers (Confederacao Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses, CGTP), plan to rally in Lisbon, Porto, and Funchal at 15:00 Oct. 15. The events will mark the end of a month-long series of labor actions to demand improved pay and pensions due to an increase in the cost of living throughout the country. The gatherings will take place at the Cais do Sodre in the Portuguese capital and the Campo 24 Agosto in Porto; organizers have as yet not announced the specific location of the demonstration in Funchal. Workers represented by the participating unions also plan to stage a short strike between the hours of 13:00-21:00. Related protests and work stoppages are also possible elsewhere across Portugal.
Although the gatherings will probably remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy increased numbers of police to monitor the events. Localized traffic disruptions are likely.
