Spain: Students to demonstrate nationwide Oct. 27
Students to demonstrate in nationwide in Spain, Oct. 27; increased security, localized disruptions likely; isolated clashes possible.
Event
The Spanish School Student's union, Sindicato de Estudiantes, will stage demonstrations in urban centers across Spain Oct. 27. The purpose of the action is to draw attention to mental health difficulties faced by students and demand additional government support for student mental health resources. Demonstrations likely to draw significant attendance will begin at 12:00 at the following locations:
Madrid: Plaza del Callao
A Coruna: Obelisco
Barcelona: Placa de la Universitat
Bilbao: Plaza Eliptica
Castellon: Placa de la Independencia
Granada: Plaza del Carmen
Malaga: Plaza de la Constitucion
Seville: Plaza Nueva
Valencia: Facultat d'Historia
Additional gatherings with likely lower attendance will occur in further towns and cities nationwide. Attendance will vary by location but will reach into the thousands at larger rallies.
Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate all demonstrations. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized business and transport disruption in surrounding areas. The demonstrations are likely to proceed peacefully but isolated clashes with security services cannot be ruled out. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted in any violence, they would face an indirect threat of harm.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in protest areas Oct. 27.
