Local fishermen affiliated with 24 various organizations continue to stage protests in Mullaitivu, Northern Province, as of Oct. 5 to demand the transfer of officials allegedly supporting illegal fishing activities. Additional demonstrations are likely over the coming days, especially near prominent government buildings, public squares, and roadways. Larger gatherings may draw hundreds of participants.

On Oct. 5, police fired tear gas and water canon as activists bypassed roadblocks to march toward the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources building; other demonstrations occurred in the Koklai Road and Mathalan areas.

Authorities are maintaining a heightened security posture and may attempt to prevent or control additional gatherings. Further roadblocks and security cordons are certain near prominent government buildings. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially if protesters block and/or march along roadways. Business disruptions are possible, mainly if clashes break out between police and demonstrators. Demonstrations may turn violent quickly, with activists committing arson or vandalism. Authorities may restrict public movement and telecommunication services if significant violence erupts.

Mullaitivu town is approximately 75 km (47 miles) northeast of Vavuniya.
