Additional demonstrations are likely over the coming days, especially near prominent government buildings, public squares, and roadways. Larger gatherings may draw hundreds of participants.

On Oct. 5, police fired tear gas and water canon as activists bypassed roadblocks to march toward the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources building; other demonstrations occurred in the Koklai Road and Mathalan areas.

Further roadblocks and security cordons are certain near prominent government buildings. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially if protesters block and/or march along roadways. Business disruptions are possible, mainly if clashes break out between police and demonstrators. Demonstrations may turn violent quickly, with activists committing arson or vandalism. Authorities may restrict public movement and telecommunication services if significant violence erupts.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to drive through protest roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-governmental building. Monitor trusted local media for changes to protest plans.
