Sri Lanka: Private bus drivers threaten to strike nationwide beginning Oct. 25

Private bus drivers threaten to strike nationwide in Sri Lanka beginning Oct. 25. Transport disruptions likely; protests, clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Bus drivers affiliated with multiple private bus associations have threatened to strike nationwide from Oct. 25 to demand several concessions, including a government moratorium on leased vehicle payments. Unless averted, private bus services will likely be severely disrupted, especially near urban centers. Commuters may seek alternative means of transport.

Activists could hold demonstrations during the labor action period. Should such protests occur, the largest protests will likely take place in Colombo, especially near bus depots, government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Authorities will likely monitor any gatherings that may materialize and could move to disperse those that become overly disruptive. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Confirm all bus service schedules during the work stoppage. Seek alternative transport, if needed. As a standard security precaution, avoid any protests that may materialize. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow additional time for travel during the labor action. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
