Activists to rally in Ankara, Izmir, and Istanbul, Turkey, Oct. 10. Increased security and transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Activists have announced plans to rally in several cities across Turkey, including in Ankara, Izmir, and Istanbul, Oct. 10. The purpose of the rallies is to pay tribute to the October 10, 2015 suicide bombing victims. No group claimed responsibility for the two bombs that detonated outside the Ankara Central Railway Station, killing 109 people, but a Turkish court sentenced nine Islamic State (IS) members to life in prison for the attack in 2018.

Thousands of people will likely attend the commemorative events. Organizers have announced the following rally times and venues:

  • 10:04: Ankara Central Railway Station in Ankara

  • 19:00: Kadikoy Pier Square in Istanbul

  • 09:30: October 10 Monument in Izmir

Increased security, as well as localized transport and business disruptions, are likely near all events.

Advice

Avoid the rallies as a standard precaution and to mitigate likely ground travel delays. Plan for road travel delays in and near the impact areas. Heed instructions from the security forces. If violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernment building.
