Authorities are investigating the robbery of a Chinese citizen in Hanoi as of Oct. 25. One of the suspects, who worked as an interpreter for the Chinese national, invited the victim for drinks at a motel in Cau Giay District Oct. 14. The four perpetrators subsequently tied up the individual at the motel, and forced him to transfer VND 60 million to them. The attackers also reportedly took two mobile phones and USD 1,160 from the victim before leaving the motel. Officials then investigated the case and arrested the suspects Oct. 23.
Context
The overall threat of crime violent crime in Hanoi remains moderate. Crimes targeting foreigners are generally nonviolent ones like theft and usually occur due to the victims' perceived wealth. Reports so far do not indicate an increasing trend of foreign nationals visiting Vietnam to steal from other foreign tourists.
