Belgium: Unionized rail workers to stage nationwide strikes starting Nov. 28 /update 1
Unionized rail workers in Belgium to stage nationwide strikes beginning Nov. 28. Rail service disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized railway workers plan to stage two strikes across Belgium starting Nov. 28. The purpose of the actions is to demand better resources for Belgian railway workers. The Common Front of Railway Workers Unions, a coalition of three labor organizations representing railroad employees, has organized the first of the two work stoppages which will run from 22:00 Nov. 28 until 22:00 Nov. 29. The SACT-ASTB, a union that represents only train drivers, will subsequently go on strike for 48-hours beginning at 03:00 Nov. 30.
Unless averted, the strike will likely result in significant disruptions to rail services throughout the country. The Belgian National Railway Company (SNCB) is advising the public that train availability will be limited from 22:00 Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 due to the labor action, although the carrier currently expects most international rail connections to operate normally. Increased congestion is likely on available rail services and other forms of transportation during the strike. Heightened demand for alternative modes of transportation may also result in reduced taxi availability. Protests by striking employees are possible at major train stations. Some disruption may linger beyond the end of the strike as the SNCB repositions rolling stock.
Advice
Check rail service schedules and follow local travel and security advice. Consider alternative transport options, if necessary. Allow additional time for travel.
