Police are responding to riots in Rotterdam, The Hague, and Amsterdam following Morocco's victory over Belgium in the FIFA World Cup Nov. 27. In central Rotterdam, hundreds of people have engaged in the unrest and some have thrown fireworks and glass at police, who have responded with charges. In The Hague, unrest has been reported in the Schilderswijk area, including on Vaillantplein, with some soccer fans throwing fireworks and harassing motorists. In Amsterdam, some 500 people have gathered in the vicinity of Mercatorplein, with some starting fires and launching fireworks; police have deployed to secure the area.
Heightened security and disruptions to transport and business are likely in areas experiencing rioting over the coming hours. Further clashes between rioters and police cannot be ruled out. Similar instances of civil unrest are possible elsewhere in the Netherlands over the short term.
