Portugal: Unionized railway workers to hold nationwide strike, Nov. 30
Unionized railway workers in Portugal to strike nationwide, Nov. 30; rail service disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized railway workers employed by Comboios de Portugal and represented by the National Union of Railway Sector Workers (SNTSF) plan to strike nationwide Nov. 30 to demand higher salaries. It is as yet unclear whether a minimum level of service will be guaranteed during the labor action. Rail service disruptions could extend into Dec. 1 as Comboios de Portugal repositions rolling stock after the strike ends.
The strike will probably be well observed and result in delays and cancellations of rail services. Increased congestion is likely on other forms of transportation during the labor action. Heightened demand for alternative modes of transportation may also result in reduced taxi availability. Protests by striking rail workers are possible at major rail centers and in front of government buildings.
Advice
Check service schedules prior to travel if traveling via rail in Portugal, Nov. 30. Consider alternative transport options, if necessary. Follow local travel and security advice. Allow additional time for travel. Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution.
