Sudan: Clashes between rival communities in Wadi Salih, Central Darfur, Nov. 9 leave at least 18 dead

Clashes between rival communities in Wadi Salih, Central Darfur, Sudan, Nov. 9 leave at least 18 dead.

Warning

Event

Clashes between rival communities in the Wadi Salih area, Central Darfur State, left at least 18 people dead, and 15 more injured Nov. 9. The clashes occurred between members of the Awlad Rashed and Miseriyah communities, and were sparked by the death of one of the community members in a robbery incident. Some reports indicate the death toll is higher, though this remains unconfirmed by local authorities.

Security forces have likely deployed to the area to quell the violence. Heightened security measures may prompt localized disruptions to transport and business. Further intercommunal violence cannot be ruled out in the area over the coming days.

Context

Creeping desertification brought on by climate change continues to drive intense competition for access to scarce resources such as grazing areas and drinking water. Given the easy availability of small arms, even small localized incidents regularly escalate into clashes, which may in turn fuel rounds of reprisal attacks between various communities, sometimes leading to heavy casualty tolls.

Advice

Exercise heightened vigilance if operating in the Wadi Salih area. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Remain calm and cooperative if approached by security personnel. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
