Turkey: Demonstration denouncing violence against women planned in Istanbul, Nov. 25

Women's rights activists to march in Istanbul, Turkey, from 19:00 Nov. 25. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Women's rights activists plan to stage a protest march in central Istanbul on Nov. 25 to denounce femicide and violence against women. Activists will gather near the Taksim Tunel starting at 19:00; organizers have not announced the exact march route or end point. The event could draw large numbers of participants. Activists plan to move forward with the demonstration despite the fact that the Beyoglu district executive has issued an order banning it.

Authorities have deployed police to monitor the event; security will likely remain particularly high in view of the terrorist attack that took place nearby on Istiklal Avenue on Nov. 13. Large crowds and related security measures will likely cause localized traffic and public transportation disruptions. The demonstration will probably remain largely peaceful; however, confrontations with police cannot be rule out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Allow extra time to reach destinations in the general vicinity of Taksim Square and Istiklal Avenue through the evening of Nov. 25. Heed instructions from security services; leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.
