Injuries and minor damage reported following magnitude-6.1 earthquake in Duzce Province, Turkey, earlier Nov. 23
Event
Authorities have confirmed at least 80 injuries, the majority of which have occurred in Duzce Province, following a magnitude-6.1 earthquake in Duzce's Golyaka District at around 04:08 Nov. 23. Authorities have carried out controlled blackouts in Duzce Province. Power outages were also reported in Istanbul Province. Some minor damage to buildings has been reported in Duzce Province. Authorities have closed schools in Duzce and Sakarya provinces Nov. 23. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. More than 100 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake, including a magnitude-4.5 tremor Nov. 23. Further aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
The epicenter of the initial quake was about 16 km (10 miles) west of Duzce. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and very strong to severe shaking was probably felt in Duzce Province. The quake was also felt in Istanbul and across other parts of northwestern Turkey, including Ankara, Bilecik, Bolu, Bursa, Kocaeli, Kutahya, Sakarya, and Zonguldak provinces.
Advice
Consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Plan for disruptions to travel and utilities in the impacted areas. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
