The unrest has included civilians throwing stones and bottles at riot police, starting fires in the street, and looting businesses. Riot police responded by firing rubber bullets at the crowd. The area most heavily affected by civil unrest has been the Obelisk. An estimated 5 million people have joined the celebrations in Buenos Aires. Reports indicate that at least 31 people have been injured. The government had declared Dec. 20 a national holiday.
