Large riots and clashes between football supporters and police are ongoing in central Buenos Aires late Dec. 20 following a day of celebration for the Argentine National Team's 2022 FIFA World Cup victory. The unrest has included civilians throwing stones and bottles at riot police, starting fires in the street, and looting businesses. Riot police responded by firing rubber bullets at the crowd. The area most heavily affected by civil unrest has been the Obelisk. An estimated 5 million people have joined the celebrations in Buenos Aires. Reports indicate that at least 31 people have been injured. The government had declared Dec. 20 a national holiday.

Hundreds of thousands of people will likely continue to attend the celebrations; crowds could occupy much of central Buenos Aires. Similar celebrations are likely in other major cities nationwide.

Authorities will almost certainly continue to deploy robust security into early Dec. 21. Transport and business disruptions are likely to continue. Clashes and civil unrest are possible in other cities nationwide.
