Officials implement security-related restrictions in Douala, Cameroon, due to gang violence as of Dec. 20.

Event

Officials have restricted certain business and transport activities in Douala as of Dec. 20, citing a recent increase in violence linked to youth gang members known as the microbes. The following measures apply until further notice:

  • Motorcycle taxis may only operate 00:01-06:00. The measure previously applied 20:00-06:00 from Dec. 14.

  • Access to bars, drinking spots, and game rooms is restricted in select areas of Douala.

  • Carrying machetes, knives, and other bladed tools or weapons is prohibited.

The US Embassy issued a related security alert Dec. 15 warning of an increase in criminal activity in the Makea, Akwa, Deido, Ange Raphael, and Bonamoussadi areas.

A heightened security presence is likely across the city to enforce the aforementioned measures and prevent youth gang-related violence. Security forces may carry out searches of personnel and vehicles. Protests by businesses and residents opposed to the measures remain possible.

Context

Youth gang members have attacked businesses and individuals in recent days, and also stormed the Laquintinie hospital Dec. 12. Other locations have likely been affected.

Exercise heightened personal vigilance in Douala. Refrain from traveling after dark. Heed all instructions from local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if stopped by security personnel. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
