Warning

Event

Authorities are likely to heighten security measures in major French cities in response to the FIFA World Cup final match between France and Argentina Dec. 18. Disruptions are likely to continue overnight and into Dec. 19. French authorities deployed 10,000 extra police and gendarmes, including 5,000 in the capital Paris for the semi-final match, although authorities later announced that disruptions were less than predicted. Similar numbers of security forces are likely Dec. 18.

Authorities may close certain metro stations in the early evening to limit the ability of football fans to gather in city center areas. The heightened security measures are likely to persist into early Dec. 19 and will remain in place irrespective of the result of the match. Some localized ground transport delays are likely. Clashes are possible.

Advice

Plan for some travel delays and disruption in the immediate vicinity of any football-related gatherings. Follow local travel and security advice. In the event of violence, withdraw from the area.
