Informational

Event

Increased security is possible in Gambia in the coming days after authorities stated Dec. 21 they thwarted an attempted coup on Dec. 20. Authorities arrested four soldiers on Dec. 21 and stated an additional three suspects remain unaccounted for. Although it is unclear who sponsored the attempted coup, it is possibly linked to Gambia's previous president, Yahya Jammeh. The government has announced the situation is stable as of Dec. 22.

Security measures may include roadblocks, checkpoints, and searches of vehicles and pedestrians; such actions are most likely in the capital, Banjul, and the largest urban center, Serekunda. Security forces may also carry out search operations to locate other alleged plotters. Related pro or anti-government protests are also possible.

Advice

Monitor local media and maintain contact with diplomatic representations. Avoid government buildings, security installations, large concentrations of police and soldiers, or any protests that may materialize. Abide by all official directives.
