Germany: Climate activists plan to escalate roadblock protests in major cities from Dec. 5

Climate activists plan increased roadblock protests nationwide from Dec. 5; likely increased security and transport disruptions.

Informational

Event

The environmental activist group Letzte Generation plans to increase roadblock protests from Dec. 5. The group is demanding lower speed limits and other measures to reduce fossil fuel consumption. It has indicated that Berlin and Munich would be specifically targeted; however, similar protests are likely in other cities nationwide. The group has recently conducted near-daily roadblocks in various locations, including Berlin, Munich, Mannheim, and Leipzig.

Typically, the protests occur without warning and target major city roads, ring roads, and access to airports. Police are likely to deploy to protest sites; protests typically last for 30 minutes to one hour before police remove protestors. Activists increasingly use super glue to attach themselves to road surfaces, to slow down the response operations. Traffic delays are likely on affected routes until activists are dispersed; congestion is likely on surrounding routes. While protesters are unlikely to act violently, security services may resort to forceful methods to disperse protests; additionally, scuffles with frustrated motorists are possible.

Advice

Avoid all protest sites if possible. Check for disruptions before beginning journeys and plan alternative routes if necessary. Heed instructions from security services and do not attempt to pass through roadblocks.
