A state of emergency is in effect in the town of Pirot as of early Dec. 26 following a train derailment that resulted in a localized hazardous materials situation. A 20-car freight train traveling from Bulgaria jumped the track near the town late Dec. 25 producing a major ammonia spill that resulted in at least 51 cases of ammonia poisoning; only about seven of the victims required hospitalization, however.

It remains unclear how long the state of emergency may remain in effect. Authorities continue to advise local residents to remain indoors.

Strictly avoid the scene of the accident and the surrounding area until responders have completed clean-up operations and given the all-clear. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
