Power outages and aftershocks are ongoing following a magnitude-6.4 earthquake that occurred off the coast of northern California at around 02:34 Dec. 20. The epicenter was about 12 km (7 miles) west-southwest of Ferndale. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 16 km (10 miles), and strong-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in areas close to the epicenter, as well as light shaking across much of northern California and parts of southwestern Oregon. More than 65,000 customers in California are without power, mostly in Humboldt County, as of 04:00 PST Dec. 20. According to the United State Geological Survey (USGS), there have been at least 21 aftershocks measuring between magnitude-4.6 and 2.5 since the initial quake. Further light-to-moderate shocks are likely over the coming hours and days.

There have been no initial reports of casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, it could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The temblor has not triggered a tsunami warning.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
