Activists are holding protests and a strike in Barrancabermeja, and other locations in Santander Department, Jan. 23-24. Several organizations are holding the strike in Campo 23, Barrancabermeja, to oppose a carbon project in Carmen de Chucuri and San Vicente de Chucuri. Additionally, demonstrators have blocked main roads leading to Barrancabermeja.

Other activists have built roadblocks in Los Colorados, near Bucaramanga, to demand government investment in their roads.

Similar protests are possible in other parts of Santander Department. Roadblocks around Barrancabermeja are likely to continue through at least Jan. 24. Significant transport and business disruptions are likely to continue. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out.
