At least nine people have died near the town of Tshikiapa, Kasai Province, following the collapse of the Lovua 2 bridge on Jan. 10. Authorities report that the collapse occurred around 11:00 local time when a van carrying passengers and supplies crossed a section of the bridge that was omitted during a reconstruction project; officials state the cause of the collapse is likely due to wear and tear. The bridge is located on National Route 1, approximately 56 km (39 miles) northwest of Tshikapa.

Lingering disruptions to overland transit and shipment are likely over the coming days.
