DRC: Militants kill at least 15 people during attacks in Irumu Territory, Ituri Province, Jan. 29

Event

Suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) militants attacked the villages of Ofay, Nayala, Kahachini, and Bandesende in Irumu Territory, Ituri Province, Jan. 29. Initial reports indicate at least 15 people died in the assaults. Soldiers reportedly repelled the militants after the initial attacks. The death toll may increase once officials are able to return to the villages.

An increased security presence is likely over the coming days. Further militant violence is possible.

Context

The threat of militant violence is severe in eastern regions of the DRC despite the implementation of a State of Siege in Ituri and North Kivu. There are regular reports of fatal attacks and kidnappings conducted by some of the numerous armed groups operating in the area. Militants usually use significant and indiscriminate violence, and foreign personnel may become the target of attacks due to the perception that they are wealthy and vulnerable.
