Libya: Clashes erupted at Tripoli International Airport between militias aligned with Government of National Unity early Jan. 19
Clashes erupted between GNU-aligned militias at Tripoli International Airport, Libya, early Jan. 19; heightened security likely.
Event
Armed clashes broke out between two militias aligned with the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity (GNU) at Tripoli International Airport (TIP), located in the Qaser Bin Ghashir area about 34 km (21 miles) south of Tripoli, around 00:30 early Jan. 19. Reports indicate that the fighting broke out after one militia refused to hand over airport security to another. Several explosions were reported near the fence line of the airport. Libyan security forces intervened, and the fighting subsided around 01:45. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
TIP is not an operational airport, and armed clashes that occur there will likely have no impact on air travel. Heightened security measures will likely be maintained around TIP and could result in localized ground transport disruptions through Jan. 19. Further clashes between GNU-aligned militias cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid the impacted location as a precaution. If further fighting breaks out nearby, immediately take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for lingering disruptions to transport and business. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
