Unionized transport workers to march in downtown Puebla, Puebla State, Mexico, Jan. 26 against vehicle verification policies.

Warning

Event

Unionized transport workers affiliated with the Peasant Torch Movement (Torchistas) plan to march in downtown Puebla, Puebla State, on Jan. 26. The purpose of the action is to denounce the vehicle verification policy that organizers claim is a new tax that will have a negative economic impact on the citizens of Puebla. Participants aim to march from Reloj El Gallito beginning at 10:00 before stopping in front of the state congress and then resuming the march towards Casa Aguayo. Organizers have also indicated that at least 2,500 demonstrators will participate.

The demonstration will likely cause transport disruptions along the march route. Although the action should remain largely peaceful, authorities will almost certainly deploy an increased security presence nearby as a precaution. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Localized business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Allow additional time for travel in central Puebla on Jan. 26. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
