Event

Insecurity will almost certainly persist in Sool Region, Somaliland, through early January in response to ongoing anti-government unrest and recent armed conflict. Puntland security forces reportedly deployed towards Las Anod Jan. 1 and engaged Somaliland forces in the Tukaraq area. The Sool Region is disputed between the two sides. There have been no immediate reports of casualties.

The latest confrontations were reported, Jan. 1. Telecommunications were reportedly cut by officials in the area, Jan. 1. Protesters are denouncing political assassinations targeting opposition figures. They allege the administration of Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has orchestrated the attacks. This latest unrest, which began Dec. 27, was sparked by the murder of a local politician.

Security personnel are likely to remain deployed in the area in the coming days. Further confrontations between protesters and the security forces are likely.
