Senior officials, including the country's president and prime minister, as well as foreign diplomats typically attend the events. Commemorative programs will also occur in districts nationwide through Feb. 4.
In Colombo, authorities will close roadways around Independence Square and near sites hosting official events on Feb. 4. Moreover, road closures, traffic diversions, and enhanced vehicular checks, will be in place along various roads within the Sri Lankan capital, and at entry points to the city 05:00-12:00 daily through Feb. 3 to facilitate event rehearsals. Authorities may require establishments nationwide that sell meat or alcohol to close Feb. 4; other local businesses typically remain closed during the holiday.
Tight security and localized traffic disruptions are almost certain near celebration venues and government buildings nationwide. Although there are no specific threats to such events, security forces will likely be on high alert for possible militant attacks based on lessons learned from the April 2019 serial bombings in Sri Lanka. Security will be particularly tight near sensitive locations that could be targeted, such as public squares, government buildings, transport hubs, and religious sites. Passengers could experience delays clearing security and customs at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB). Demonstrations by various groups are possible, especially in Colombo and the ethnic Tamil-majority Northern Province.
