Activists plan to gather in several cities in Sri Lanka Jan. 11 in support of detained activists. Tight security, disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Pro-democracy activists plan to protest at several locations across Sri Lanka Jan. 11 in support of detained activists. Organizers have announced the following actions:

  • Galle: Central Bus Station, 15:00

  • Negombo: Awariwatta Clock Tower, Katunayake area, 17:00

  • Rajanganaya: 5th Mile Post area, Anuradhapura District, 17:00

  • Thimbirigasyaya: Healthguard Building, 17:30

Dozens to several hundred people could participate in each demonstration. Security personnel typically monitor demonstrations and may attempt to prevent or control the gathering. Localized transport disruptions are possible, especially if protesters march on or block roadways. Business disruptions are possible, mainly if clashes break out between police and demonstrators. Protests may turn violent quickly, with activists committing arson or vandalism.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
