Sri Lanka: Protests denouncing government's recent income tax plan and ongoing medicine shortages possible in Colombo through at least late January

Activists affiliated with various trade unions and civil organizations and opposed to the government's recent plan to increase income tax as well as ongoing medicine shortages may stage protests in Colombo through at least late January. Protesters held demonstrations near the Ministry of Finance building and Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre Jan. 20, prompting transport disruptions along several thoroughfares, including Lotus and Galle roads.

Although no group immediately announced specific plans for any related demonstrations, activists may stage rallies at popular venues, such as Galle Face Green and Fort Railway Station, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and along major roadways. Attendance will vary by location or organizer; most rallies involve a few dozen people. Gatherings by political parties, trade unions, and student organizations typically draw the largest participants.

Heightened security and localized disruptions to transport and business are likely, especially during larger gatherings and marches.
