Sri Lanka: Rail disruptions likely to continue nationwide through at least late January amid ongoing worker shortage /update 1
Rail disruptions likely to continue across Sri Lanka through at least late January amid worker shortage.
Event
Rail disruptions will likely continue nationwide through at least late January amid an ongoing worker shortage. Beginning Jan. 16, Sri Lanka Railways will cancel 30 short-distance train services. Primary routes impacted include the Main, Coastal, Puttalam, and Kelani Valley lines. Rail authorities previously suspended 42 train services Jan. 12. Officials may extend the cancellation of other train services at short notice.
Lingering disruptions may occur after rail authorities attempt to resume services as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding; demand for alternative means of transport will probably be higher. Increased traffic congestion is likely as persons who would normally use Sri Lanka's rail network resort to driving their personal vehicles. Business disruptions may occur in freight transport delays and/or in the event of prolonged rail service cancellations.
Advice
Consider using alternative transport for time-sensitive travel until rail service operations normalize. Plan accordingly for possible business disruptions. Allow extra time to reach destinations due to increased traffic congestion and demand for alternative transportation.
