Sudan, South Sudan: Heightened tensions likely after attack kills 13 people in Rumamer village, Abyei Area, Jan. 2
Heightened tensions likely after attack kills 13 people in Abyei Area, disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, Jan. 2; UNISFA troops patrol area.
Event
Heightened intercommunal tensions are likely in the Abyei Area, a territory disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, over the short term after armed herders killed 13 people and wounded five others in the region's Rumamer village Jan. 2. The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) asserted that youths from the Nuer and Twic Dinka communities carried out the assault. UNISFA troops have deployed to the affected area to carry out patrols, find the remaining assailants, and preempt further violence.
Authorities will probably maintain an increased security presence in the area over the coming days. Additional attacks cannot be ruled out; in the event of further violence, officials could impose restrictive security measures, including curfews.
Advice
Exercise caution if operating in the Abyei Area. Travel only in convoy and during daylight hours. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
