Unionized teachers, affiliated with the Colombian Federation of Educators (Federacion Colombiana de Educadores, FECODE), plan to hold protests nationwide Feb. 28, over a series of issues, including protections for public education, and improved benefits for teachers.
The main demonstration will be held in Bogota, where activists will march in two locations: from the Cundinamarca Governor's Office to the Education Ministry, starting at 09:00, and from Avenida Jimenez to the Presidency of the Republic, starting at 10:00. In Medellin, demonstrators will march from the ADIDA union building to Parque de Las Luces, starting at 10:00.
Protests in other major cities, including Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Bucaramanga, are planned, but details have not been confirmed. Thousands are likely to participate in some of the demonstrations, with associated transport and business disruptions. Heightened security is likely around government buildings. Clashes between protesters and police are unlikely to occur but cannot be ruled out.
