Unionized public service workers to stage strike in Bielefeld, Germany, Feb. 9. Bus and light rail disruptions likely through early Feb. 10.

Warning

Event

Unionized public service workers affiliated with Ver.di trade union plan to strike in Bielefeld beginning Feb. 9. Union leaders have called on an estimated 2,600 employees from several sectors within the Bielefeld Municipal Works groups, including Mobiel bus and light rail to participate in the labor action. Mobiel employees will strike beginning at 03:00 and will not return until 03:00 Feb. 10; sub-contracted transport routes will not be impacted. The purpose of the action is to demand a pay increase, among other things. The labor action will not affect the following transport services Deutsche Bahn, BVO, TWV, Westfalen-Bahn, Nordwestbahn, and the Eurobahn.

Given the Mobiel employees' participation in the labor action, the strike will almost certainly cause disruptions to bus and tram services. The action will likely result in increased traffic congestion and greater demand for alternative modes of transport. Strike-related protests cannot be ruled out. Residual disruptions may extend for several hours after the labor action as participating rail operators reposition rolling stock.

Advice

Confirm all urban public transport reservations in Bielefeld Feb. 9-10. Consider alternative transport options to mitigate travel disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations. Limit exposure to likely protest sites and demonstrations as a precaution.
