Germany: Rival activist groups to demonstrate in Berlin's Marzahn area Oct. 19

Rival activists plan demonstrations in Marzahn, Berlin, Germany, from 14:30 Oct. 19. Tight security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Rival activist organizations plan to demonstrate in Berlin's Marzahn area during the afternoon of Oct. 19. Members of several antifascist groups will assemble at the intersection of Markische Allee and Raoul-Wallenbergstrasse starting at 16:00 before marching to the intersection of Mehrower Allee and Markische Allee. The purpose of the event is to denounce right-wing activism in Germany and show support for women's rights.

As a counterprotest, activists from Deutsche Jugend Voran (German Youth Forward, DJV) and affiliated groups will gather at the Springpfuhl S-Bahn Station starting at 14:30 before marching to the intersection of Mehrower Allee and Lea-Grundig-Strasse.

Participants in both events will remain on Mehrower Allee until 23:59, when the two demonstrations will conclude. It remains unclear how many participants the gatherings may draw.

Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor both events. Road travel and transport disruptions are likely in and around the Marzahn area into the early hours of Oct. 20. Although the demonstrations will probably remain largely peaceful, clashes between demonstrators and police, or among activists from opposing camps, cannot be ruled out.

Avoid the affected area as a standard precaution. Allow additional time if traveling near the Marzahn area into the early hours of Oct. 20. Strictly heed all instructions from law enforcement officers. Immediately depart the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
