Guatemala: Protesters disrupt traffic along sections of CA-2 and CA-9 highways near Retalhuleu and Sanarate Feb. 16

Protesters affiliated with the Peasant Development Committee (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) are disrupting traffic along sections of CA-2 and CA-9 highways as of early Feb. 16. Demonstrators are blocking the Castillo Armas Bridge, located between Santa Cruz Mulua and San Sebastian, at kilometer marker 178 of the CA-2 Highway near Retalhuleu. Demonstrators are also disrupting traffic along CA-9 Highway near the entry to Sanarate.

Protesters may also gather in different parts of the country and transport disruptions can continue for several hours. Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the gatherings; clashes between protesters and police are possible.

Avoid the protests as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent the protests. Allow additional time to reach destinations in affected areas Feb. 16.
