Hungary: Rival activist groups to demonstrate in Budapest Feb. 11

Rival activist groups to demonstrate in Budapest, Hungary, Feb. 11; increased security, localized disruptions, isolated clashes likely.

Warning

Event

Far-right activists plan to demonstrate in Budapest Feb. 11 to commemorate an attempt by Nazi soldiers to break out of a siege during World War II. The Legio Hungaria group reportedly plans to gather from 13:00 but will only announce the demonstration's location shortly before it begins; the gathering point will likely be in the Castle District. Far-right activists will also stage related marches, including from Kapisztran Square to Viragos-nyereg beginning at 16:30. Anti-fascist activists plan to stage a counterprotest at Becsi Kapu Square from 13:00. Attendance across all gatherings will likely be in the hundreds.

Authorities in Budapest have reportedly banned several far-right gatherings related to the Feb. 11 events and will almost certainly deploy a significantly increased security presence in the affected areas to monitor proceedings and disperse prohibited gatherings. The demonstrations and any related security measures, including possible movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized business and transport disruptions in affected areas. Isolated clashes are likely between rival groups of demonstrators and between demonstrators and police. While bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence, they could face an indirect threat of physical harm.

Advice

Avoid the demonstrations as a routine security precaution and to mitigate the impact of any associated disruptions. Heed all instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected areas Feb. 11.
