Nepal: Further transport operator protests are possible in Kathmandu following Feb. 13 unrest
Further transport operator protests are possible in Kathmandu, Nepal, following disruptive unrest Feb. 13.
Event
Further protests by transport operators are possible in Kathmandu in the coming days following large protests in the capital Feb. 13 over the introduction of new traffic regulations and alleged police excesses. Organizers stated that no public transportation would be provided in the Kathmandu valley as part of the action. The duration of the protest is not clear.
Several sections of the Kathmandu ring road were blocked Feb. 13, including in Balaju, Chakrapath, and Gongabu. Hundreds of individuals participated, parking minibusses and lighting fires to block traffic.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of protest sites. Protesters could clash with security forces if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Do not drive through protester roadblocks; wait for officials to clear these or for demonstrators to disperse. Heed instructions from authorities. Plan for public transportation disruptions. Reconfirm business appointments.
