Nepal: Public transport workers to launch work stoppage in Kathmandu beginning Feb. 14 /update 1

The Independent Transport Workers' Association of Nepal (ITWAN) will commence a strike in Kathmandu from Feb. 14 to demand several concessions, including lower traffic violation fees. Unless averted, the work stoppage will severely disrupt public modes of transportation throughout the city.

While organizers did not immediately announce plans for additional gatherings, activists notably held demonstrations Feb. 13, including in Balaju, Chakrapath, and Gongabu; localized transport disruptions occurred along several sections of the Kathmandu Ring Road. Several incidents of vandalism were also reported. Additional rallies are possible over the coming days, especially near major government buildings, public squares, and thoroughfares. Similar previous demonstrations have drawn hundreds of participants.

Authorities are likely to monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may move to forcibly disperse overly disruptive crowds. Violence may occur at larger gatherings; officials may conduct mass arrests. Clashes between police and activists cannot be ruled out. Localized business disruptions may also occur.
