Netherlands: Unionized train and bus staff to strike in multiple regions, March 2-3
Unionized bus and train staff to strike and protest in multiple regions across the Netherlands, March 2-3; transport disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized rail staff working for regional public transport operators plan to strike, March 2-3, to demand increased salaries. Three transport workers' unions have called for industrial action, and the impact on regional services will depend on the proportion of members who engage in strike action.
The VVMC (Train Driving Personnel) union plans to stop working on March 2 in the Achterhoek Rivierenland, Twente, and Limburg regions, and on March 3 on the Vechtdal line, and the MerwedeLinge line in the Dordrecht region. Workers plan to demonstrate in Emmen, Zwolle, and Mariënberg, March 3; protests are likely to take place at transport hubs or outside rail operating company buildings.
The FNV (Trade Union Federation) has also called for strikes in Twente, Achterhoek, Dordrecht, and Limburg regions, March 2, and between Emmen and Zwolle on March 3. Further localized strikes on regional rail and bus routes are likely due to a separate pay-bargaining campaign.
Delays and cancelations of bus and some train services are likely: recent strikes have impacted around 50 percent of services. The action could result in increased traffic congestion and greater demand for alternative modes of transport. Related demonstrations are possible in town and city centers or near transport nodes. Any pickets that do occur are likely to be peaceful and largely undisruptive.
Advice
Confirm public transport schedules and local traffic conditions before travel and allow extra time to complete journeys March 2-3. Make alternative travel arrangements if necessary.
