Assailants kill at least 11 people near Intagamey, Ouallam Department, Tillaberi Region, Niger, Feb. 10
Event
Unidentified assailants attacked a military patrol near Intagamey, Ouallam Deaprtment, Tillaberi Region, Feb. 10, killing at least 11 soldiers. In addition, the attack left 13 soldiers injured, 16 more missing and three vehicles destroyed. The incident occurred near the Malian border. The identity of the assailants is unclear; however, given the location, Islamist militants are suspected. Local authorities have said the death toll could rise considerably.
Context
Tillaberi is one of several regions in Niger currently under a state of emergency due to frequent jihadist militant attacks. Local security forces remain largely unable to mitigate and remove the threat. Further violence is likely.
Advice
Exercise a high degree of caution in the impacted location and heed authorities' instructions. Maintain a very low profile, restrict nighttime movements, vary routines, and move in guarded convoys. Minimize exposure to potential targets, including places of worship, security installations, markets, and other crowded locations. Carry proper identification and travel documents at all times.
