Poland: Adverse weather forecast nationwide through at least Feb. 19

Strong winds forecast across Poland through at least Feb. 19. Transport, business, and utility disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

A strong storm system moving over the Baltic Sea will bring extremely strong winds across much of Poland through at least Feb. 19. Some rainfall is expected in northeastern and southern regions over the coming days and rising temperatures could lead to thawing snow in the south; however, the hazard of most concern will be the strong winds, especially in northern coastal regions where gusts could reach up to 125 kph (78 mph). The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has warned that the severe winds could cause damage to electricity and transport infrastructure, as well as knock over trees and damage property. Flights are likely to be disrupted at airports and port operations may be suspended due to rough sea conditions generated by the gales.

As of Feb. 17, the following warnings have been issued across Poland:

  • Red strong winds warnings (the highest level on a three-tier scale): Coastal areas of Pomerania and West Pomerania province.

  • Orange strong wind warnings: Across the rest of the northern half of Poland.

  • Orange thaw warnings: Across southern Lesser Poland, southeastern Silesia, and southern Subcarpathia provinces.

  • Yellow strong wind warnings: Across the southern half of Poland.

  • Yellow thaw warnings: Parts of southern Lower Silesia Province.

  • Yellow heavy rainfall warnings: Parts of southeastern Silesia Province.

Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.

The strong winds could lead to downed power lines and consequent power outages, as well as damage from flying debris. Strong wind gusts could lead to rough seas conditions in coastal areas and difficult overland travel conditions.

Transport
The severe weather will likely cause ground transport disruptions in parts of the affected region. Traffic and commercial trucking delays might occur along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are likely on secondary and rural roadways in affected areas as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become hazardous. Gusty winds may topple high-profile vehicles in some affected areas. Hazardous weather conditions might also cause flight delays and cancellations at regional airports over the coming hours and days. Authorities may temporarily suspend port operations along the coast if strong winds trigger hazardous sea conditions, impacting freight and passenger maritime traffic.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated emergency and weather information. Seek updated information on weather and road conditions before driving or routing shipments through areas where severe weather is forecast. Plan accordingly for potential delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through affected areas. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
