Portugal: Unionized rail workers to strike nationwide Feb. 8-21
Unionized rail workers to strike across Portugal Feb. 8-21; rail service disruptions likely.
Event
Unionized rail workers affiliated with various unions, including the National Union of Drivers of the Portuguese Railways (SMAQ), will strike across Portugal from Feb. 8-21 over a pay dispute. Additionally, workers from CP and Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) announced a 24-hour strike Feb. 9; Fertugas rail services between Setubal and Lisbon will be impacted. CP anticipates severe rail disruptions on inter-city commuter, regional, and long-distance trains. Officials report that the Court of Arbitration of the Economic and Social Council has yet to make a minimum service decree.
Overcrowding is likely on available modes of public transport for the duration of the strike. Increased demand for private transportation, including taxis and rental vehicles, is also possible. Traffic congestion will likely be heavier than usual as more commuters resort to using their cars rather than public transport. Residual delays are possible for some hours after the strike ends.
Advice
Consider alternative modes for time-sensitive travel and allow additional time for travel to destinations throughout Portugal Feb. 8-22. Confirm taxi and rental car reservations.
