Uganda: As of Feb. 9, protests possible nationwide, especially Kampala, in coming days over renewal of UN mandate

Protests are possible nationwide over the coming days, notably in Kampala, after authorities in Uganda announced they will not renew the mandate of the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the country. Police forces warned Feb. 8 over unlawful planned protests at the OHCHR office in the Kololo area of Kampala early Feb. 9. There have been no related protests reported at the time of writing. However, security forces arrested several activists at the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) office early Feb. 9. Activists were reportedly planning to deliver a petition to demand the resignation of the UHRC head, citing alleged misinformation in regard to human rights abuses in Uganda.

Heightened security and localized traffic disruptions are likely in the vicinity of all related protests. Police forces will likely deploy to disperse any such gatherings forcibly. Clashes with security forces may occur.

Avoid all protests due to possible clashes. If crowds form or violence occurs nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Heed all official directives.
