Bangladesh: Various opposition parties to protest nationwide March 11

Various opposition parties to stage protests across Bangladesh March 11. Increased security likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Various opposition parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), will stage protests across Bangladesh on March 11. The purpose of the action is to demand multiple concessions, including the resignation of the current administration led by the Awami League (AL). As a part of their action, activists plan to form human chains and may stage vehicular road marches.

Other political groups may hold additional demonstrations, especially near government buildings, public squares or grounds, and major thoroughfares. While gathering sizes will vary by location, the largest turnout is likely at BNP-related events; several thousand people will probably participate in such gatherings. Activists may change venue locations on short notice if police prevent them from assembling or due to organizational-related issues.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near rally sites and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Security personnel typically resort to using force, such as tear gas and rubber bullets, to quell incidents of civil unrest. Clashes between police and activists, as well as between supporters of rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. The protests will likely prompt localized transport and business disruptions.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased risk of violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations near protest locations. Plan accordingly for possible localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
